[I hope that quite a few US list members will sign the
petition and thereby show their commitment to
Information Assurance. WEN]

*********************************************************

With the public's support, we actively promote "Information Security
Awareness Week" by urging governors and mayors throughout the country to
officially declare the fourth week in April "Information Security
Awareness Week."

*********************************************************

Are you in A Security State of Mind?

That is the key question we encourage everyone with a login to ask
themselves.

Please join us in April when the Nebraska University Consortium on
Information Assurance, The University of New Haven, the Omaha Area
Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP), and others
across America are devoting the week of April 20 - 26th to the
celebration of Information Security Awareness Week. This week is an
opportunity to promote the creation of safe computing environments and
habits within our schools, businesses, and governments. This week
focuses on activism for public INFOSEC awareness, and training and
education in information security.

Introduction

We are at a time in the history of our society where computers and
communication systems are at the core of our lives. Further, with the
current climate and the rise in cyber crime Information Security
(INFOSEC) has become an integral part of making our country and planet a
safe place. We feel deeply that these issues must be brought to the
forefront at this time; and that special activities and declarative
statements need to be made to ensure that INFOSEC Awareness is brought
front-and-center at this time. Please join us in the proactive approach
to improving the protection of our computers, networks, and therefore
our nation in this most trying of times. While the event this year is
focused in Omaha, NE we have localizable materials so all cities,
counties and states can quickly and easily take part this year -- and in
the future.

The Launch Event and Activities

We will be officially launching our web site (http://www.isaw.org)
devoted to Information Security Awareness Week on April 14, 2002. The
site is currently available in beta launch. This site will contain
information about statewide proclamations, simulcast and distance
learning events and an education curriculum for students, teachers,
researchers, law enforcement, state agencies, businesses and information
security professionals.

A plethora of Awareness tools, security tools and other "surprises"
await! Please check us out.

As part of the Public Outreach and Awareness effort, we will be
providing the following events FREE to the general public, and specific
subsections.

get there? If we don't and proceed as if we do, who is culpable when the
worst happens?

Sunday, April 21, 2002
1:00 PM - 5:00 PM CST (Panel, Invited Audience, Public)

State and City Government Proclamations

With the public's support, we actively promote "Information Security
Awareness Week" by urging governors and mayors throughout the country to
officially declare the fourth week in April "Information Security
Awareness Week."

We need help from residents of each state to campaign to recognize the
fourth week in April as "Information Security Awareness Week" in your
state. If your state has not signed a proclamation declaring Information
Security Awareness Week, please send a letter to your governor.

Your letters are very important to this process because many states
require proclamation requests from residents within the state. Below,
you will find a sample letter and proclamation.

Sample letter to the governor

Dear Governor [INSERT Last Name],

I am writing as a [INSERT Your State] state resident to urge you to
officially recognize the fourth week of April as Information Security
Awareness Week for this year and years to come.

Information Security is the cornerstone of secure e-Commerce, National
Security and many other things that effect the lives of all of us in the
United States every single day. Security on the Internet and other
networks has been misunderstood, and the dark side glamorized for so
long in the media and the movies that the real issues have long been
shrouded by myth and urban legend. Information Security Awareness Week
is an important vehicle for dispelling misconceptions and educating the
public about the role ethics, trust, technology and education play in
maintaining a safe computing environment. It also encourages the public
to develop more of a proactive stance towards INFOSEC issues. During
this week, we are making available by various distance learning
meanings, a strong FREE program of information security awareness and
information security education.

Please help us educate the public about this important issue by becoming
the next governor to recognize the fourth week of April as Information
Security Awareness Week. Attached is a sample proclamation on this
initiative.

Sample Proclamation

A PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, the importance of Information Security Awareness is an integral
part of any Information Security Program; and

WHEREAS, a growing awareness of the dangers posed by Cyber-Terrorism,
Information Warfare, and the criminal use of computer systems has raised
academic and professional interest in promoting public awareness in
Information Security; and

WHEREAS, the security of the United States of America remains uncertain
and depends upon continued public support and increased understanding of
the essential role each individual play in Cyberspace;

NOW THEREFORE, I, [INSERT GOVERNOR'S NAME], Governor of the State of
[INSERT STATE] hereby proclaim the fourth week in April "Information
Security Awareness Week" in the State of [INSERT YOUR STATE], and
commend this observance to the people of this state.
